The Review:

The original Milwaukeewings website started back in 2009. If you've been visiting since then, you may recall Leff's Lucky Town was the very first review we ever posted! I've been here countless times since then, but don't think I've actually had their wings since that first review. So, I figured Leff's was long overdue for a revisit, so off to Wauwatosa we went!

A trio of us stopped in at Leff's on a Tuesday, as wings are listed in their Tuesday specials section. However, there really isn't any special in the way you'd expect one. There is to special price, but rather Tuesday is just the day they change their "wing sauce of the week." So, that was a bit disappointing, but a special flavor each week is pretty cool, keeps it fresh. With no special, an order of wings (which constituted about 8 wings) ran you $15, so they're definitely on the pricey side, even with current wing prices. *As always, prices/availability of menu items/prices and/or specials are subject to change at the sole discretion of the bar without the knowledge of Milwaukeewings.com and may not be updated accordingly.*

The sauce/flavor list isn't too long but most wing eaters should find something they'd like, normal menu sauces/flavors: Mild, Medium, Hot, Ass-Kickin', Cajun BBQ, BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, Teriyaki, and Naked. As mentioned earlier, there is a sauce of the week, which was Bourbon BBQ the week we were there, but check the Leff's website in the specials section to see what the current flavor is.

Wings themselves were served up hot and crispy, well sized and juicy for the most part, but some were a bit drier. Wings may or may not come with a side order, there was some confusion when ordering as we were asked for side that didn't arrive until we brought it up.

Hot: A nice standard buffalo. I have this theory that all Leff's buffalo sauce heat levels start with the same sauce, it just depends how much of that dry seasoning they shake on the top of the. No idea if that's right, but I'll stick with my theory. A very peppery buffalo flavor with a vinegar zing that Amber found too hot for her tastes but I thoroughly enjoyed.

Bourbon BBQ: We tried the special sauce of the week, and I wouldn't have really called this a BBQ flavor, I've seen this sauce a most places just called 'bourbon' or 'sweet bourbon' as it didn't have the normal characteristics of a BBQ sauce. Often anything with bourbon in the name is way too sweet for my tastes, but this one had a nice savory flavor to it that balanced out the sweetness a bit. Not really what I expected with this sauce, but pretty tasty.

Garlic Parm: Garlicky with that funky nutty taste of the parmesan, this sauce wasn't so much creamy or buttery as it was oily which we really didn't care for too much.

The MKE Wings Crew's Favorites:

Frank: Hot

Jeremy: Hot

Amber: Bourbon BBQ

Conclusion:

We love Leff's. We love the vibe, we love the patio, but we don't really love the wings. Another case of, 'Okay, but not Great. Leff's is definitely a bar to check out if you've never been, but if you're specifically looking for wings, I think there are better options out there.
